P90X: Worth It?

Man Weight LiftingWe’ve all seen the infomercials for products that guarantee weight loss results.  As a fitness professional, I usually disregard the claims relying on what is tried and true:  regular activity and healthy eating.  That’s not to say that there aren’t any that deliver on a promise.  In this blog, we’ll focus on the P90X Extreme Home Fitness Training System.  Their claim?  To get you “absolutely ripped” in 90 days.

The P90X program includes 12 workout DVDs, a fitness guide, nutrition plan, and tracking calendar.  The workouts range from 30 to 90 minutes.  One pro is that you can do this in the convenience of your home.  A review published in the September/October 2009 issue of ACE Fitness Matters states, “Certainly, many of the exercises are very advanced and the workouts are intense.  Promoting the concept of “muscle confusion” to accelerate results, most of the workouts move very quickly from one exercise to the next, which necessarily increases the risk for injury.”

This program is appropriate for those who are already somewhat fit.  If you are a beginner or don’t have the time to devote to these workouts, then choose another avenue.  Slim people will most likely see results when they dedicate themselves to the program.  The idea of “muscle confusion,” though, is not new and is an important consideration for any regular exercise plan.  For any workout to continue to be effective, you must change it every few weeks.  Meaning, adding reps, sets, weight, time, or distance.  Your body responds to increases in intensity.

Before you start any exercise program, make sure it is something that you will stick with.  The key to adherence is enjoyment.  Have you used the P90X?  Leave a comment sharing your feedback!
